Dr. DeSousa burst many myths around drug addiction like cannabis can be consumed occasionally and for the purpose of recreation and the influence of other drug uses in rehab centres can have negative impact on their recovery in his session. He also spoke about how the social stigma prohibits and addict to own up their addiction.
Ms Priyanka Varma compare drug addiction to binge watching on platforms like Netflix. Just like that would cause a person to struggle to maintain routine hobbies social life and relationships, addiction to drugs also function in the similar of sense. In her session on how to identify a addictive behaviour she mentioned how it cannot resist the urge to consume substance. She also mentioned how people make excuses to not confront addict's behaviour. Support system is an essential part in recovery which is why establishing a connection or not severeing the existing ties is important.
Mr Vipan Sachdeva came out as a recovering addict in his session and describe his journey of addiction starting from when he was forcefully made to to smoke a cigarette till present when is clean for 28 years and helping others on the path of recovery. Mr Sachdeva put family on the core of recovery of an addict and highlighted how it was impossible to recover without the support from one's family.
The workshop ended with a question and answer segment where among other things, topics like consent of addict, role of family, rehabilitation facilities and drug abuse in medical students were explored. Questions around doping in sports, addiction to other substances like caffeine and other activities like gaming were also answered.
