Friends,
When Janet (NADA Philippine) first finished her NADA training in 2004, she contacted most therapeutic communities and drug treatment programs in the Philippine. None were even curious for a demonstration of acupuncture for addiction. Later she and her NADA colleagues gave large demonstrations at several important addiction treatment programs. None asked for more services. The word was they were all encouraging the use of psycho-pharmeceutical drugs. One speaker at an annual NADA conference claimed that research shows that depression is more common in the Philippines than any other country. In the world. To anyone who is familiar with the usual smiling Filipino countenance, this ‘research’ claim is ludicrous. However, there is a high rate of psycho-pharm usage by the complacent population.
The Recovery Center Foundation is a therapeutic community which uses NADA acupuncture. It is a very creative and inexpensive program. Most programs receive requests from desparate families to help one of their relatives. RCF starts by helping that family with acupuncture and group counseling on a frequent outpatient basis. Soon there is greater health, compassion, and tolerance in the family so that addicted members can be attracted to join the process. Individuals are able to attend at least 90 consecutive days on an outpatient basis. Extensive 12 steps meetings are included in the program. Use of acupuncture helps cope with long term conflicts within the family before asking the primary client to commit to a path toward recovery. Both sides of a conflict experience acupuncture-induced relaxation at the same time which helps them to be tolerant about lessening the conflict within the family.
Extensive family support allows an outpatient process to be continued . The typical expensive therapeutic community process of isolating and infantilizing clients in closed units with families banned is there by avoided. The frequent TC outcome of alienation after a clients’ discharge can be avoided. The whole family becomes aided by therapy and receives the gift of peace and empowerment that acupuncture provides. This plan would be appropriate for serious mental illness problems as well. In Manila the exploratory learning in continually growing. Eventually it may be helpful for all the world. MIKE
